The last summer festival we attended was Ancient Future in Montreal. The festival is quite young, as they’re only in their third year, but it’s really something people should check out next year. It’s pretty diverse and its atmosphere is incredible. The festival takes place in the heart of Montreal, and just getting there, whether you are walking or taking a cab, you can see just how accessible and beautiful the city is. You will see the vintage and artistic touches all around, and you’ll feel entertained before the event even starts, just by site seeing.

Once we got to the festival we saw that it was built by a very young group of creative people since it was so diverse when it came to the music and art part of it. The event had 2 modest stages and a massive stage, ‘The Hangar’. One stage was a truck named ‘Boombox’ that featured acts such as Mall Grab and Kevin Saunderson. Another live stage that they had was more experimental, with live sounds, and acts like Omar Souleyman and The Underachievers.

This stage ran earlier and ended around midnight. The biggest stage was ‘The Hangar’ was pretty much showcasing underground electronic music acts like Victor Ruiz and Sam Paganini. I really loved the setup, you could see just how diverse the acts were between Hip Hop, House, Techno and other genres. Can’t leave out that they had workshops and art paintings behind another tent called the dome.

The festival had the best of everything both indoor and outdoor, while also being right in the city, which gave it a unique vibe that everybody enjoyed. The festival had a pretty young crowd, like the ones you would see at more Mainstream festivals. In this you can see the transition of the underground moving towards a younger audience. They’re looking and discovering different types of sound. I personally think that Ancient Future fills a void that is needed; having underground acts from various electronic genres in one place while combining art, all happening within a beautiful city. I would certainly recommend going to this event, it’s not that expensive to go and you can discover some new music and enjoy yourself while doing so.
