With the success of 2015 “Straight out of Compton” and “The Get Down” on Netflix in 2016. Hip-hop has gone from boom box to the big screen, by telling stories of the early days of what now can be called, pop culture. With electronic music lately, we haven’t had the same luck. “We are your friends” was a fiasco and Netflix’s XOXO, made the Zac Efron movie look like The Godfather. With that said, here are some biographies that should be taken to the big screen.
Moby
Arguably, Moby at one time was the biggest electronic artist on the planet. His successes started with the single “Go”, to his multiplatinum album “Play” in 1999. But, with great success, didn’t come greater happiness. Moby had a long battle with drugs, alcohol and bad relationships. This lead him down a dark spiral of his long career, not to mention his early beginning growing up in a poor family home. You can read this in his book titled “Porcelain”, but it would be nice if this was transformed into a film.
The Detroit Techno Story
Many people that do not follow electronic music, would be surprised that it was created in Detroit, by 3 male African Americans, that turned the motor city into an electronic music landmark. It would be welcomed if this could spin off a series of stories like Jeff Mills, Underground Resistance and Richie Hawtin. This story could be told in some many ways and I believe it could be a Netflix series. There are several documentaries about it like “High Tech Soul,” and “Slices – Pioneers of techno,” among others, that could be used as references.
Frankie Knuckles
The whole reason why we hear House music today is because of this man. As a young black gay man, he moved from New York to Chicago, to start one of the biggest music revolutions in history. This is all while the death of Disco was happening. There seems to be something already in the works for this, so this might appear on the big screen sooner than we expect.
Daft Punk
They became one of the biggest acts in electronic music while keeping their identities secret. This was rare to see when they first appeared on the scene and has been mimicked by lots of mainstream artists since. They made French house global in the 90’s and were able to crossover into the mainstream with their own sound. It would be a nice story to tell since not a lot of people know about their lives. There is a bit of them In a French movie title “Eden,” but is very brief.
Ralf Hütter
This name will probably not sound familiar to you, but if you know about a little German band called Kraftwerk, you would know that he was the leader and founder of this group, along with Florian Schneider, who left the band in 2008. This movie might not be possible, since Hütter and Schneider, do not like to talk about their personal lives and have given limited interviews. But, it would still be interesting, for all the techno and new wave enthusiasts.
